Review
"Like the prior edition, this is a much-needed 'how-to' for classroom teachers that also warrants close attention from education professors and literacy coaches. No other book so thoroughly (but succinctly) summarizes the history of phonics instruction, explicates its role in reading development, and offers such a wealth of ideas for assessment, curriculum, and instruction. Call it 'one-stop shopping' for this pivotal issue in reading instruction! This is a book that preservice and inservice teachers will turn to repeatedly, long after purchase. It is a great text for undergraduate methods classes and reading endorsement master's classes, as well as a resource for professional learning communities."--Kathleen J. Brown, PhD, Director, University of Utah Reading Clinic

"I recommend this second edition as a text for preservice and inservice teacher education courses. The book not only demonstrates how to teach a variety of phonics strategies, but also explains why the strategies need to be taught this way. Teachers will appreciate the examples of students' misconceptions, as well as the word lists and assessment tools in the appendices."--Barbara R. Foorman, PhD, Francis Eppes Professor of Education and Director, Florida Center for Reading Research, Florida State University   "I am certain that teachers--and all professionals interested in making sure children learn to read well--will find this book thought provoking and invaluable. The seminal research presented is rigorous yet highly accessible, and is illustrated with instructive, entertaining anecdotes. The new and expanded chapters in the second edition provide an eloquent picture of the challenging tasks that young children face as they learn to read, and show how to help them surmount these challenges."--Carol McDonald Connor, PhD, Learning Sciences Institute and Department of Psychology, Arizona State University

Best book on phonics I have read so far
By bren
I have been teaching for 5 years, and this is by far the best book on teaching decoding/phonics I have read so far! A must read for all elementary school teachers! It is useful for both whole class instruction and small group intervention. It has an entire phonics/decoding curriculum, which goes from knowing a few sounds and beginning to read CVC words, to how to teach students to read multi-syllable words. The lessons/ activities are easy to produce and implement in the classroom with minimal prep. There is a partner website will all of the reproducibles ready to print. As I read each chapter, I have been using the strategies/ structured lessons/activities with my students and they love it. I can see progress already. I highly recommend it!!

some fun ways to learn phonics
By MmeClavie
This is the book used by the schools in my county. I bought it to help my daughter prepare for a more advanced school program. We used magnetic letters (like the ones for on the fridge) and an old cookie sheet. She thought the activities were really fun. Using manipulatives is helpful to many young learners. The rest of it's kinda dry if you're not an educator, but it does give you some good ideas for reinforcing phonics.

Example activity: the child puts a certain set of letters on their "board" You tell them to put s - u - n and ask them to read the word. Then you tell them to replace the s with an r and read the resulting word (run). Then they can replace the n with a b and read that word (rub). They can replace the u with an o (rob) then replace the r with an s (sob) and so forth.

Easy to read and understand
By Alexandra deSousa
This book has been so useful in my graduate school reading specialist masters program and in my own teaching! Beck puts things in a simple way and makes it very easy to read and understand. This has helped me help my struggling students in reading and I would recommend this book to any teacher.
