Ireland has a long and complicated history, and this book doesn't cover it all. I'm not sure any single book can. This collection focuses on people and some of the more recent pivotal moments in Irish history. Most take place in the last one hundred years or so, from the Easter Rising in 1916 to the Good Friday Agreement.
It is not a complete history. It is entertaining and educational, and the book is an easy read that is designed to tempt the reader into learning more about Ireland, its people, and its revolutionary history.
About the Author
Shannon Haire is a dreamer, a writer, an herbalist, and a history enthusiast. Her passion for Ireland has inspired her for more than half of her life and continues to grow every day. She maintains an online Irish history blog called Choosing the Green and is a contributing writer and copy editor for The Atlas Obscura.
She lives in Oakland, California, much to her dismay (and delight) but is determined to return to the Irish home of her heart to stay someday.

The best part of this book is that it's not like ...

The best part of this book is that it's not like a regular history book. The woman's section is super interesting but the rest of it gets better and better too. I learned a lot but never felt overwhelmed or bored when reading because it was easy and entertaining. Five stars and recommended for anyone who is even kind of interested in Irish history - I wasn't before but I am now!

History can be a dry read sometimes. This author has managed to write about historical figures in an entertaining style with bite-size essays that are a pleasure to read and very well researched. If you are curious about the history of Ireland this is a great book to start indulging in that curiosity!

A well-researched and enjoyable read. This author really knows her Irish history. An added bonus are the sources in the back of the book. I would read more from this author.
