It's Black and White. Best of the Bunch.

This is a beautifully produced text. The introductory chapters are appropriately light math and heavy on well illustrated concepts. The practical tips will prove invaluable to beginning head and neck ultrasonographers. There is a brief review of the 6 neck levels with succinct color illustrations and normal ultrasonographic appearance. Subsequent chapters on various anatomic levels and common pathology are very well done. Perhaps the most valuable asset of the text is the ultrasound pictures themselves. Printed in gloss with high contrast black and white ( with occasional Color Doppler) like you would see on a good monitor. I have read two other head and neck (and skimmed a 3rd on Amazon) US books; the US images are not comparable.
It's Black and White. Beautiful. Succinct. A Classic.

About the Author
Dan Heisman (born 1950) is a United States Chess Federation National Master and author. He is the two-time Open chess champion of Philadelphia (1973 and 1976), and the Philadelphia Invitational Chess Champion (1973). His Penn State team won the U.S. Amateur Team Championship in 1972. Although rated over 2200 by both the United States Chess Federation and FIDE, he is currently inactive as a tournament player. Heisman is a member of the International Computer Games Association and worked at both Deep Blue versus Garry Kasparov matches (1996 and 1997).

A truly solid introduction to tactics!

As a USCF 1428 player, I'm always trying to improve my tactical vision. There are a plethora of tactical books on the market and chess books seem to be rolling out like hotcakes. When I initially picked up this book, I thought it was a little too basic for my current playing level; however, upon further exploration of the book, I soon realized this effort was a gem. Mr. Heisman has chosen examples that are clear and uncomplicated allowing the reader to truly understand the essence of the described tactical motifs. He begins each chapter by choosing almost ridiculously easy problems to solve, though this is what makes the book so very instructive. As I read through each chapter of motifs to be learned, along with a chapter on checkmates and defensive tactics--most all are covered nicely--I truly absorbed Mr. Heisman's 'no nonsense', lucid approach. Throughout the book, the Author peppers in pearls of wisdom for building tactical acumen. This book is an excellent primer of the nuts and bolts on building tactical awareness and garnering knowledge that is both helpful and PRACTICAL! After completing this book in about a month, I truly absorbed the presented ideas and had a satisfaction in finishing this fine book.
I would recommend this book to any budding chess player, all the way up to USCF 1500-1550. Beginners will use this book to build a solid knowledge base of tactics, while lower intermediate players will find this effort to be a fine review of already learned material. I don't know Mr. Heisman personally; however, being a dedicated follower of his articles on Chess Cafe and his weekly radio program on ICC, Dan is an excellent teacher and as every move in life has a purpose, so should the same philosophy be applied to the chess board, according to Mr. Heisman. Recommended!

Excellent Intermediate-Level Book

I could not imagine money or time better spent to improve my playing strength.

I bought this book on the reputation of the author and to fill the gap between the easy problems in The Chess Tactics Workbook: Expanded 4th Edition by Al Woolum and the harder problems in John Nunn's Learn Chess Tactics.

I am USCF rated 1727 and still struggled with about 10% of the problems in the book. I feel I am seeing more and calculating faster now. I especially liked the 78-problem test chapter and the "Is There a Win" chapter.

Again, it's a chess book and not suppose to be entertaining but I'm a little bored from it. It's not very interactive even though it gives a lot of puzzles and examples to work on.

As a counselling student, I found this book inspirational in understanding the concept of narrative therapy and an added bonus from the christian faith perspective. It is an excellent read and one which can be read over and over again. I thank the author for their input.

Worth Every Penny

This book does exactly what it sets out to do - explains the entire process of creating 3d game art for the Torque engine in 3DS Max. As such, it is invaluable to a beginner in the Torque engine, as the art pipeline, particularly from 3DS Max, is often frustratingly convoluted if you try to "go it alone".

My only real criticism of the book is that it reads like an engineering manual. There is little levity here, little to break up the masses of information one needs to absorb in order to create, export and code a given model. This makes getting through the book something of a chore at times - it demands a high level of concentration.

That said, there is no wasted space here, and while I found it quite heavy going - in fact, tiresome at times - I'm extremely happy with the results I've achieved following Brad Strong's tutorials.

If you're serious about creating games for the Torque engine, this is one of the definitive books you really need on your reference shelf. 3DS Max can be intimidating even for those trained in its use, but the author cleverly only covers the toolset required for creating Torque-ready models, and covers them in detail.

Definitely recommended.

Solid entry level art book

Well written, straight forward coverage of all the steps and techniques necessary to model, texture, and animate 3d assets for your game. It is by no means a comprehensive guide, but never claims to be. If you are looking for a primer on 3d studio max and would like to understand the art pipeline, this is a fantastic book.

Pros:
A considerable breadth of knowledge (covering modeling, texturing, animating, and exporting) each covered without too much skipping ahead. The author is able to stay focused and give you accurate step by step directions without being too terribly dry.

Cons:
Teaches the biped animation which, I am told, is something most artists recommend avoiding completely. The author mentions this is for brevity's sake, to avoid having to cover the much more complex (and book worthy in it's own right) subject of bone animation. So this isn't a deal breaker for me.

The book is short, and may not leave you completely satisfied.

Conclusion:
If you've tried other books that talk about art tools and you felt a little lost, this is a great place to pick up. If you do not have a desire to learn about any technique in particular, but would like more of a walkthrough the entire asset pipeline, this is a great book for you. If you want to drill down into the nitty gritty of something specific, or if you feel like you already have the basics down and want something a little more meaty - then you should probably look elsewhere.

Beware of getting the wrong edition

I got this book and it was the wrong edition that is not sold in the USA! They even tried to cover it up with a sharpie marker over the edition label that states "This book is not for sale in Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, and USA." The back cover states that it is not for sale in European Economic Area, the United States and Canada. So, if you are looking for Mim's Medical Microbiology 5th edition, make sure you get the correct edition that is written for you country. You may want to pay the extra fee at the bookstore to get the right book instead of online that may sale you the wrong copy like Universe_of_Books.

Prefer other textbooks...

I much prefer medical microbiology from Murray over this text, the main utility of this text for me was the system based organization, but even for that something like Harrison's cardinal manifestations is better. My reasons for not liking this text also include: inadequate depth, unclear organization (ex: some things are headings for very unclear reasons, tables/figures that interrupt flow of reading, tables placed later that were relevant earlier in the text etc.), I've found a few mistakes already, and it lacks references (I expect this for at least major algorithms/pathophys etc). On the plus side, it does have some nice tables and figures, and is easy to read
