A basic text that is truly hospitality oriented and easy to read and understand

Finally there is a hospitality accounting text that is easy to read - but yet authoritative and applicable to the real world. The author's hospitality experience (educational and vocational) clearly makes this text one of the best in the market. The accounting procedures are based on the use of computers, instead of obsolete manual systems. The financial statement analysis chapters are second to none. Its concluding chapters include credit/debit cards, budgeting, forecasting, internal control of cash, and ends with business math topics critical to the hospitality manager. This is a real hospitality text ---- not some typical accounting text labeled as hospitality.

Ok, it's an accounting textbook... but, I was able to use this for 2 courses. . That alone deserves 5 stars! Even if you don't need this for a class and own a small restaurant or similar, it is a great text to familiarize yourself with hospitality accounting.

About the Author
Richard Salvucci is Professor of Economics at Trinity University. He has held major fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Philosophical Society. In 2006, he was the Peggy Guggenheim Visiting Fellow at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, and, in 2008, he delivered the Christopher Lasch Memorial Lecture at the meeting of The Historical Society. He has published in the Hispanic American Historical Review, the Journal of Interdisciplinary History, and Historia Mexicana. His books include Textiles and Capitalism in Mexico: An Economic History of the Obrajes, 1539-1840; Latin America and the World Economy: Dependency and Beyond; and a chapter in The Cambridge Economic History of Latin America. In 2001, his article in the Journal of Interdisciplinary History, coauthored with Linda K. Salvucci, won the Conference on Latin American History Prize. Richard Salvucci lived in Mexico City from 1976 to 1977 and has returned repeatedly to Mexico for research and other professional purposes since then. He has also spent extensive periods in England, Spain, and Cuba doing historical research.

About the Author
Paul Moon lectures in New Zealand history at the Auckland University of Technology and has a growing reputation as an original and well-informed historian. He is the author of a number of books on New Zealand history, specialising in Treaty issues and the early years of European settlement - his most recent work is The Newest Country in the World: A History of New Zealand in the Decade of the Treaty.

I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds

I'm Maori - staunchly so. I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds. The practice is abhorrent (my ancestors engaged in it with gusto so its part of my heritage and I'm more than equipped to make this statement). Interestingly by the turn of the 19th century Maori writers of the day were openly scornful of 'kaitangata' practices that their own grandfathers and fathers had been part of.

I have no patience for critics who accuse the author of cultural relativism, cultural appropriation, cultural misunderstanding, and even racism. These are not critiques of the book but rather a sign of the accusers discomfort with the truth they are confronted with. My ancestors ate people - that's what they did. And the practice was widespread and a well integrated part of the culture. You can't gloss over it or try and put a spin that somehow makes the practice 'ok'. They didn't engage in the practice for spiritual reasons or whatever. I'm sure no victim of kaitangata went into the hangi saying 'at least I'm being eaten for cultural and spiritual reasons'.

I did struggle a little with section 5 onwards. The argument seemed over reached re 'revisionist apostasy'. But other than that a good and thought provoking read.

BTW we Maori are big enough and tough enough to take a bit of academic critique of our (old) practices.

A balanced and well argued account on Maori cannibalism. The testimony of the numerous witnesses, along with the Maori oral histories, and the archaeological proof, should surely challenge any naive celebration of indigenous culture.

Thought Provoking

This is a thought provoking read and probably not for someone wanting only entertainment. However, it provides a probably more authentic look at early Maori life than many of the new age revisionist views, which can tend to portray some sort of lost idyllic utopia. It is food for thought as to how much the hardships and horrors of the past may subconsciously still be affecting Maori to this day and manifesting in some of the social problems that are evident in contemporary New Zealand.

Amazingly heartwarming!

This is the first book I have read from this author and it will not be the last. Mavis Applewater has written an amazingly heartwarming story that covers, love, family, second chances and she created a story within a story about the ancestors of one of the leads. Really well done! Had to finish in one sitting. Now I am reading the Brass Ring and its sequel Checkmate.

Light and superficial..but sometimes that's all you need!

Before reading this novel ask yourself a question: what is it that I am looking to read? There is a time and place for a novel like Finding My Way but you have to be in the right head space. If you are looking for a thought provoking, well written lesbian romance... this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking for what I like to call "lesbian fluff" this is a decent read. Every once in a while that is what I want to read. I don't want to think, I just want to enjoy a good lesbian romance and my rating is from that point of view.

Even though the book is close to 500 pages it is a very quick read; mostly because it is quite superficial so you can just devour the pages without having much to think about or consider except for the few times the writing became too ambiguous to follow in one pass. The dialogue felt stiff, most of the turmoil felt majorly overblown and the writing at times became very tedious and repetitive. For a while it reads like a tamer, lovey-dovey lesbian version of 50 Shades of Grey, and the writing here is not nearly as bad as that was. But, for all its flaws, again, if you are in the right mindset none of that really matters. You read a book like this because you want to feel light hearted, passion and butterflies and this book delivers. There is such precious little in the way of decent lesbian romance that you may cling to any little bits that you can find.

Suggestion: If you want a very easy to read lesbian romance that keeps it light with lots of romance: read this. If not, try The Paying Guests or Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters or Bodies of Water by T. Greenwood.

Sequel please?????

Can we please get a sequel to this book? I absolutely loved it! The background and history of each character, the constant inner force to scream at the characters and laugh with them, and of course the ever pleasant pull of true love. I felt as though I was actually watching and living with these characters and watching all the events unfold in real time. I want to find out further about this continuous growth of Alex and Dr Grant. Will the children be laid back like Alex? Will they get married? OMG! Please give us a sequel!!!
