About the Author
"I didn't know a harp could do that!" is a remark often heard at Laurie Riley's concerts. Known for her ability to make a harp sound like a whole new instrument, she can make it speak, make it laugh and cry. Audiences feel her music as a visceral experience. A professional musician since the age of ten, Laurie has toured throughout the US, in Canada, and in Ireland. She plays selections from around the world, from historical times, as well as compositions of her own. "The richness of various cultures' musical styles offers endless ways to express what I play. Whether it's Celtic, South American, Scandinavian, Israeli, Ukranian... there is something new in each tradition." Through her playing, the double-strung harp has emerged as an exciting new sound in the world of harps. She was instrumental in designing the modern double-strung harp which has become popular in recent years among harpers. Two rows of strings played at the same time make this instrument sound like a duet of two harps. She has recorded eleven albums of harp music, authored five books, and made five instructional videos. She also judges harp competitions and teaches for harp organizations in the US and abroad. "As a musician, I am gratefully aware that I hold in my hands the experience of music as a metaphor for life, which is offered as a gift to all who gather to listen." Beth Kolle performs Celtic and Nordic music on harp, flute and Irish pennywhistle, both as a soloist and with various groups in Seattle. She travels in the US, Canada, Europe and Scandinavia to teach and perform. Beth has taken groups of harp players with her to Scandinavia on two performance tours to wide acclaim. As a member of Greensleeves and The Seattle Harp Duo, Beth brings to her performances both a solid classical background and her passion for traditional folk music to enthusiastic audience. Beth studied classical piano and flute at the University of Washington and received a BA in Music. She has released six CDs and has published nine books of harp arrangements.

Teach Yourself Lever Harp?

I have always been touched by the sound of a harp and recently I have been blessed by the opportunity to acquire one. A dream I didn't know I had until it became true. I love my harp :)
Having a harp, I needed music and instructions for how to play. I bought this Mel Bay book as it seemed to be a step by step guide. I started playing.
After only a week or two, I realized that there was no way I was going to master the technique of playing without some teaching from someone who knows about playing harps. I have now had about 10 lessons, and I look at this book and I am amazed at how Mel Bay could possible claim that you can teach yourself to play harp!
Correct posture is SO important, correct finger movement is SO important, and not easy to learn if you don't have anyone to show you how - and someone to keep correcting and adjusting your efforts. Teaching yourself will not only lead to probable inflammations of all kinds of muscles (finger, shoulder, arm and back!!!), but you are also likely to practice a technique which will inhibit your playing at more advanced levels. And then, it is very difficult to 'unlearn' what has become automatic.
The music pieces in the book are in themselves quite nice - although not original. Most are well known traditional songs. Some pieces are set up in easy, medium and hard levels. So you can begin to play from the book quite soon - but I strongly recommend you do so under guidance of someone who knows what they're doing! Even the easy level pieces suggest you start playing with all fingers. Whilst each finger ought to be trained (in movement, strength and hard skin!!) before another one is added to your playing. By the time you've trained all your fingers, the easy level pieces in the book become obsolete because they're TOO easy!
The book is fine to have amongst your collection, it's pretty to look at. But to be honest I don't recommend it - certainly not as a 'teach yourself' book.
