Pleased This Amateur Mechanic

A good manual for all basic things; it's still in my purchased used car 8 years later and, hey, it's hard to ruin this model Subaru. Read other reviews here for limitation with CV boot changes; yeah, it could have been better in that category. I found it handy and pretty much spot on for removing the dash panels, working on the emergency brake and clutch pedal assemblies, dash stereo, front door panels, starter and alternator replacements, etc. If there is specific major work you want to do with this manual, read the other reviews here and for the Chilton manual to see which one might work better for you. I'm very happy with this manual overall and it's served me well for 42 thousand miles.

If you work on your car, you want this!

I have owned a Haynes manual for every car I have ever owned and I highly recommend it for general maintenance as well as troubleshooting problems. I am a somewhat knowledgeable female, my brother is a mechanic and always worked on my cars for me when I lived near him but when he is far away I would feel comfortable working on my own car with this manual...it is like having step by step instructions for anything that needs to be done.

I have this one as well as a Chilton. In all honesty I'd have to say I prefer this one actually. It lays everything out in very simple step by step processes (with pictures for those of us that aren't too mechanically savvy) HIGHLY recommend this!

VERY great book...there were graphs on my step 1 that were straight outta this book....if ur on a systems based coursework use it...read it twice in prep for the boards...and u'll do great....do the questions on subjects u aren't clear on...

for BOD, i'd read the heart section during the cardiovascular section...and kidney during renal...and so forth...

THE Step 1 Physiology review

This book is the best review for physiology on Step 1. That does not mean it is the most detailed, or that it has everything, but in terms of high-yield information that is managable in limited time, it takes the cake. It follows the format of Costanzo's larger text "Physiology" which is more intended for coursework, and which is also excellent. It is loaded with high-yield information and great diagrams. If you know it well, you will be well prepared for Step 1 (and physiology is a pretty big part of that exam.)

Most physio topics are coverede very well. Some pathophysiology topics (e.g. cardiac arrhythmia) are not. In those cases, "Pathophysiology for the Boards and Wards" can be used as a supplement. It wil not be enough by itself for coursework. Suggestions for a course textbook are Costanzo's "Physiology" or "NMS Physiology", both of which are excellent. NMS has more detail, Costanzo is somewhat easier to read. But for Step 1 physiology studying, this book it it.

Really helps you pick out the things you MUST KNOW. Great tables.

Doesn't have enough substance or diagrams for renal physio. It also doesn't cover clotting/coagulation (please correct me if i'm wrong), so make sure you get that info elsewhere...

Weapons organized by function, but in need of a reorganization

This is the third edition of "Weapons" from the Diagram Group. Taken on its own it is very good; a rare, possibly unique work among references on arms; it is organized by function rather than era, region, or alphabetically. Accordingly, you'll see a current police baton on the same page as a several thousand year old club. The functions begin with arming the hand (a rock, for example) and proceeds (more or less) by complexity, ending with aircraft, missiles, nukes, etc.

Without a doubt, there are better works on weapons of an individual era, or specific classes of weapons, but there is no better survey or overview of weapons. The omissions that I noticed were extremely rare (and dead-end) technologies that even soi-disant experts might be ignorant of. True, not every rifle ever manufactured is mentioned, but every major operating principle is. On the other hand, it included some little-known and exotic arms that illustrated major principles, for example, the 13mm air rifle that was used by the Austrians during the Napoleonic wars. Exotic, but not included because it is exotic, included to illustrate the principles of projectile weapons that use compressed gas as propellant (rather than a chemical reaction).

But as a "third edition" it leaves much to be desired. The basic work from 1980 is reprinted in its entirety, with two blocks of content added in the two following editions. This wasn't too bad in the second edition, published in the 1990s, but in this one, it creates the appearance that Diagram Group was just coming back to a money maker without applying the same standards of production used in the first one. This could be fixed by revising the small arms section to include rifles, pistols, and machine guns developed in the past ten years, rather than throwing recent developments in the a pile at the end. The practice of merely lumping new material in the sections at the end of the book also defeats the purpose of a reference organized by function rather than time period, detracting from what makes this work most useful and interesting.

For what it is, a survey of tools of violence, "Weapons" is without equal. The organization makes it very accessible and easy to use, despite the editorial decisions in this third edition. Throughout, the authors write in such a was as to educate without a condesending or arrogant tone. I still can't recommend it highly enough.

Encylopedaic but in need of editing

This book covers the basic principles of weapons design and evolution. Some additions have been made to this edition, but you frequently stumble upon outdated descriptions, ie "this grenade is still in use with many warsaw pact countries" or "the assault rifle is expected to reach the armed forces by 1995".

For those interested in basic weapon mechanics or the evolution of weapon systems ranging from bows to Stinger missiles, this book is essential reading.

This book is obviously the best weapon(s) book encyclopedia you can get. I mean the bibliography contains well-written info on all the weapons we man have created with well-drawn diagrams from prehistoric to modern times. I recommend this to anyone whether they're a weapons enthusiast or a history buff.
