Big Errors... buy only if required.

Barely two stars...
This text is full of typos, math errors, and oddly worded explainations and questions.
One example is on page 128 i believe, a reference page for trig functions. CosA is defined as Adjacent over Opposite here. I am truly sorry to any student who is required to use this product that was published to make a quick buck.

This does get two stars because the questions do have a variety of real world situations as discribed. This text turns math into a vocation instead if an abstract model.

Not very easy to follow

Not very easy to follow, not at all intuitive. The copy that I rented came through with the cover almost completely torn off. It is useable but is not in great shape. It was not what I expected. It is however the course textbook so I need to have it through this quarter. Thank you.

Excellent

Not only an excellent book on stretching but an even better template on what a "how to" guide should include: photographs (from different angles), thorough explanations, without filler. It includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced in one volume, rather than "spreading" them across three or four books. That, to me, demonstrates a great deal of integrity on the authors' part. There are partner exercises as well as individual exercises for each muscle group. I would place Stuart McRobert's Insider's Guide to Weight Training in the same category. Solid, user friendly, and thorough work.

Excellent book with challenging stretchs. Only one problem, the book had so many stretchs that you would have to have a while to get all of them done. Good for anyone who wants to increase flexibilty.

Early in this century, Futurist and Dada artists developed brilliantly innovative uses of typography that blurred the boundaries between visual art and literature. In The Visible Word, Johanna Drucker shows how later art criticism has distorted our understanding of such works. She argues that Futurist, Dadaist, and Cubist artists emphasized materiality as the heart of their experimental approach to both visual and poetic forms of representation; by mid-century, however, the tenets of New Criticism and High Modernism had polarized the visual and the literary.

Drucker suggests a methodology closer to the actual practices of the early avant-garde artists, based on a rereading of their critical and theoretical writings. After reviewing theories of signification, the production of meaning, and materiality, she analyzes the work of four poets active in the typographic experimentation of the 1910s and 1920s: Ilia Zdanevich, Filippo Marinetti, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Tristan Tzara.

Few studies of avant-garde art and literature in the early twentieth century have acknowledged the degree to which typographic activity furthered debates about the very nature and function of the avant-garde. The Visible Word enriches our understanding of the processes of change in artistic production and reception in the twentieth century.

Visibility in Language and Art Exposed

In this fabulously demanding book, Drucker traces the development of how we see language, how we conceive of it on the page and canvas, and what the ramifications of that are in the realms of sound and meaning. This very densely written, scholarly text is at each page an explosion of citations and reflections which are the condensation of Drucker's dedicated research (I believe of 10+years!) and her exploration of the movements that define our time of the Word Made Flesh. She will either make you feel like you, too, have done all the work to get to these pages, or lead you off on your own hunt for more. Whichever it is, the journey is well worth the effort.

Spirit Builders; A review

Spirit Builders is an introduction to the movement and practice of Congressional Illuminism. Wait, that's not quite fair. Spirit Builders is a detail and open ended approach to Congressional Illuminism through a synthesis of the Point Chauds and the Freemansonic 97th degree system. No, that not really doing justice to this work at all.

Spirit Builders is an do it yourself manual for spirit for enlightenment ( Spirit building) centered around a simple and customizable framework that is filtered through Palamas's unique spiritual heritage.

It's a damn fine book.

Spirit Builders is a book in three parts. Book one offers a detailed explanation as to what Free Illuminism is and what its goals are. Included is a brief history of the movement as well as a detailed lineage. According to Palamas Free Illuminism is a non-hierarchical and non-authoritarian approach to spirituality. Essentially this is a without the priest. No grand poo bas, no secret chiefs, no blessed leader, and no boss. The group is composed of individuals seeking to facilitate the spiritual development of others. Folks united in a common goal of spiritual growth and communion.
Book one also explores the Chapel model, the purpose of the work, and The rite of Memphis+Misaim in detail.

Book two delves into what a three grade intiatory system. Each step along the path is explained in detail with the form, function, and spiritual significance of that grade. So what are we getting ourselves into with the three grades? Palmas has set for a Three-Fold Path which embodies- Purification-Illumination-Unification. This is the preliminary work to actual Spirit Building. These three grades form the foundation you build your temple upon.

The vast majority of the book is dedicated to Book three which explores each of the 97 degrees in detail, offering the seeker a wealth of understanding. Each grade is linked to one of the 97 Point Chauds, hot points os spiritual angry which function as the engines and furnaces of the seekers quest for gnosis and illumination. This section is impossible to do justice to in a brief review, however what can be said is that it is a cache of occult knowledge that is of benefit to anyone family with lodge style/masonic practices.

Synthesis is something Palamas is a master at. In Spirit Builders Palamas draws on a myriad of practices from a variety of occult practices. They are landed together to form an organic whole, greater than the sum of its parts. Rather than a slipshod amalgamation of practices, Palamas has generated an unique and frankly special framework. Those familiar with his earlier work Syzygy will understand the passion that Palamas has for paradigm blending. I'm the kind of guy who has avoided large organized groups. I'm not a fan of hierarchy, in fact I often find myself in the office of the insubordinate. It's not that I don't like authority, I simply do not enjoy the weight of hierarchy. What I have found in Spirit Builders is something that has lit a fire under my ass to take my work beyond the strictly personal.

This book is in my opinion the most important book on Memphis Misraim in our day. It builds firmly upon the foundations laid by Marconnis, Yarker, Crowley, T Allen Greenfield, and most especially of Hierophant Michael Bertiaux. Sadly, due to many factors, Memphis Misraim died a slow death as a Masonic Rite over the years. Even the earliest monitors of the 97 Degrees were skeletal and added only a handful of fully worked degrees beyond the 33rd. Here the emphasis is on the Rite as it developed onward from the Gnostic Ecclesiastical Revision of 1921 where certain Franco Haitian Gnostic bishops began working the rite as a magickal rather than a Mainstream Masonic Order.
This massive tome is complete in every way and includes commentary and exposition on all degrees and the body centers ( "Hot Points" ) that they are used to activate. In short, this book is a must have for anyone interested in Memphis Misraim as a system of Free Illuminism.

I cannot stop saying enough good things about this amazing book. Tau Palamas has provided us with an in - depth explanation of the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis - Misraim according to its dual Magickal - Masonic use by the Free Illuminist/Congregational Illuminism Movement. It includes a streamlined version of the Symbolic Degrees (Entered Apprentice through Master Mason) which requires only two people to perform each initiation. That makes setting up nodes or lodges capable of initiating others so much easier. But there is so much more. The book explores the depth of the spiritual meaning of each and every degree in the APRMM; and it provides a pathway using the points chauds to open up magickal pathways in the initiate all the way through the 97o, which was the final degree of the APRMM at the time of the 1921-1922 Ecclesiastical Revision which joined the APRMM to a current of Gnosis. Tau Palamas has also provided us with very personal anecdotes from his initiatory experiences, opening up levels of understanding and empathy and the work is illustrated by his magnificent art. This work is a MUST for all students of Freemasonry, but particularly those who are not stuck in their "Regular" York Rite understanding and can explore a very esoteric path that evolves from the Other Freemasonry, the Progressive, Continental Tradition that reigns in Latin America and Continental Europe with Orders like the Grand Orient de France; and particularly those Progressive orders of Freemasonry that use the APRMM. Now, raids and plundering confound the settlements near the Blacktooth Ridge. The armies of King and Lord are warring in the west and few are left to protect this region. Rumors of Rottenkip the Goblin King and his fearless warriors taking up residence in the Blacktooth Ridge are circulating. Ogres and Trolls are raiding villages and looting caravans. Few are coming to the aid of those beset by these depredations and the evil denizens of the Blacktooth Ridge continue to spill out of the Blacktooth Ridge.

The call has gone out, the mustering of militias is at hand and the Blacktooth Ridge beckons to any and all willing to come to their aid and discover what is calling forth these foul creatures.

If you play Castles and Crusades this is probably a module you have run or will. If you don't you may want to import it to any D&D like rules set. Basically there is a village that needs help with some local problems that are terrorizing the local peasants. The baron is unable to do much other then collect his taxes. Enter into this the PCs who can be from the village or just wandering through and need some adventure. This module reminds me a lot of B1 Search for the unknown and B2 keep on the Borderlands for D&D Basic from years back. This module is a good intro for players and castle keepers new to the Castles and Crusades system and needing a starting module. The module doesn't drown you with details but gives enough bare bones info for a CK and lots of random monster tables and info on the nearby terrain so a CK can throw in their own encounters and make up some of their own lairs for critters. With the info on the locals and the NPC's' a CK can flesh out all sorts of NPC encounters and interactions or ignore it all and do a "go from the village to the dungeons" sort of thing. Let the players tell you what they want to do and go from there. Anyways if you play Castles and Crusades this module is pretty much a must as its a "classic" and if you play D&D its still a good buy as it converts easy enough as it uses some pretty standard monsters, gives some good maps of a starting village and gives some flavorful NPCs which can be used or ignored as you see fit. One thing is keep in mind that at its price you aren't getting a mountain of material this module is inexpensive and for that you are getting a bare bones treatment of a village, some NPC's, some random encounter tables. maps of terrain nearby with suggestions on what lurks where and a couple short small lair maps with a listing of whats in what lair. All in all I think this module was one of the better RPG purchases I made in awhile. Anyways the module is for lvl 1 to 2 characters to start and a CK/DM has plenty of room to add to it so characters could spend several levels doing stuff in and around the village. There is more danger as you go farther afield so you could add to the stuff in here and stretch it over several gaming sessions fairly easily. This module is well worth the money.
