About the Author

Kathi 'Fatti' Burke is An illustrator with a passion for all things Irish. With a combined love of mapmaking and travel, she likes nothing more than drawing the places around her. She graduated from NCAD in 2012 and has been working as an illustrator ever since, creating commercial, editorial and commissioned pieces. Originally from Co. Waterford, Kathi now lives and works in Dublin City.

John Burke is a retired primary school teacher and was Teaching Principal of Passage East National School from 1980 to 2009. He has always been interested in environmental studies, local history and exploring Ireland. He is currently Chairperson of Waterford Teachers' Education Centre and Secretary of Barony of Gaultier Historical Society. He lives in Waterford.

This is just a superb overview!

I read it because I have a column on nonfiction in School Library Journal and do talks about it all over the country. I kept renewing this one because I did not think I would like it. Then I started it and was blown away. I have read many books about World War II, but this gave me a perspective and overview that was truly illuminating. I kept reading bits aloud to my husband and then showed him the spread on the island-by-island strategy for invading Japan. He stared at it incredulously (the whole thing made sense to me in a way I had never understood before) and vowed to read the whole book.
Which he did and kept saying he wished everyone he knew would read it because it provided such illumination.

I wish this series would multiply and especially one on the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War I. Maybe the Napoleonic wars. But we wish these were marketed to everyone. This is just absolutely excellent!

great overview

Word War 2 was a dark period in our nations history. This book will give students a peek into the way life was back then. It covers how the war started, describes where battles were fought and also has lots of information on how the war ended and what life was life after the war. Full color photos help to give a visual to tie the information together. Perfect resource for report writing.

This book gives a detailed yet on-point history of WWII appropriate for kids. The book is well & honestly written with wonderful learning points and awesome pictures!! Great factoids and definitions given along with great history timelines of the war. Highly recommended! My daughter loves it!

Perfect gift for any kids getting a new sibling

This book was a gift for my kids when we were expecting another baby. I was worried about how my own "Sister Bear" would feel about being displaced as the youngest. The story is a cute one telling how Brother Bear was already accustomed to babies but Sister Bear was not happy about it at first. It explains in simple terms why parents have to spend so much time taking care of the baby and eventually works its way to showing Sister Bear how nice it can be to have another sibling. My daughter loves the book and even though he's a bit older, my son does usually end up sitting close by listening after a few pages. It also came with stickers in the book which I had not realized from the description (though it is clear in the picture of the cover). My daughter loves stickers so that was a nice bonus. Overall I thought it was a great book that can help kids with any jealousy issues or possibly prevent them in the first place if read ahead of time. I get asked to read it all the time.

Decent, not as good as it could be

Purchased for our almost 5 and almost 2 year olds- First half or so focuses a lot on Sister Bear thinking the baby is annoying- not really crazy about putting those thoughts in 4 year old's mind if they're not there yet. Second half of the story is better- overall an ok story, not the best. Will be ordering more books to read with the kids about baby #3. Am using the book as part of our "It's Facebook Official" announcement- kids will be sitting together looking at the book (at least that's the plan, ha!) Love the cover for that purpose. I like that it includes stickers.

Great book for those that have another child on the way! Sister bear becomes jealous over the attention that the new baby is receiving but is won over by the end. My 6 year old asked me to read this 3 times in a row when it came in!

About the Author
Wende and Harry Devlin graduated from Syracuse University with degrees in fine arts and both evolved into accomplished painters. They later moved to New Jersey, where they became lifelong residents, to raise their family.

The Devlins first collaborated in the 1950s on a syndicated comic strip, Raggmopp, based on the antics of their seven children. After this, for more than thirty years from 1963 to 1995, Harry and Wende delighted young children with their Cranberry and Old Witch series.

Some of these stories contained more than just happy endings, featuring recipes pleasing to children and adults alike. In fact, many people remember Old Black Witch as the "Blueberry Pancake Witch," and this beloved series went on to sell over a million and a half books.

Wende's words, brought to life by Harry's vivid illustrations, will continue to enthrall future generations as an unforgettable legacy in children's literature.

A Holiday Favorite!

I remember my father buying this book for me sometime in the early '70's. I loved Mr. Whiskers from the very beginning. It was one of my first lessons that there is more to a person than meets the eye. And I was fascinated by the "secret" recipie- I still make it for holiday parties, and everyone loves it! I'm looking forward to holiday time and sharing it once again with my nephew!

The pictures are beautiful and the story is entertaining

Such a cute book. The pictures are beautiful and the story is entertaining. I found myself chuckling at some of the scenarios. My 3 year old enjoyed it but I think his favorite part was making the recipe at the end. Already ordered a couple more books by this author

Cranberry Thanksgiving

I gave this as a Thanksgiving gift along with a loaf of cranberry bread. I originally bought this book for my children many years ago. It became a Thanksgiving tradition to read the book and bake the bread together. Now that they are older we still get together a few days before Thanksgiving and bake the bread. I'm sure the tradition will continue with their children some day.

Very advanced, but the single most advanced book you can buy

The good: If you want to make cakes just like they have at Dalloyau and Fauchon, buy this book. Divided into: fruit cakes, chocolate cakes, tarts, and petit fours. It tells you EVERYTHING there is to know. The pictures are stunningly beautiful, more so than ANY dessert book I have ever gotten, and I have about 12 or so. The desserts are very original - Pierre uses stuff like saffron and violet, and rose, and all sorts of flowers in his mousses for example. Cool combinations: Chocolate mousse/lemon cream chocolate cakes, genoise/raspberry/orange mousse cakes for example. I am not kidding: if you have this book you will know every single decorating technique, every single way of putting together stuff just as they do in the french bakeries. It lists just about every kind of mousse, every cake you could want, which ways to decorate them, and most importantly how to put it together. This is my favorite dessert book.
The bad: You have to know what you are doing already. The explanations are sparse. For instance, the explanations for pastry cream goes like (this is not real but an example) boil milk + vanilla. Add in whisked yolks/cornstarch. Put back on stove at 120C for a few minutes. Cool to 140 F, then put in butter. So the explanations are very sparse. All recipes are made for 2-4 cakes so you have to scale down. Everything is metric, everything is by weights (so you have to know 1 yolk = 20 g, 1 white = 30 g for instance). Gelatin is used in sheets in the book, so don't forget to put in about 1 T water for every 1/2 t of powder you use (if you're american and use gelatin powder) It helps to have "desserts by pierre herme" by Pierre and Dorie greenspan to "convert" back and forth units, since some cakes are in both books. Sometimes you may want to substitute: ie regular genoise for Pierre's genoise, regular puff pastry for Pierre's inverted puff pastry. In these cases it helps to know what you are doing first.
Overall: The best book period, in my opinion. Definitely worth the extra cost - it is worth 3 regular books. You have to know what you are doing first though, not for beginners. Other recommended books in the same French cake style: "desserts by pierre herme" by Herme and greenspan, and "art of the cake" by bugat and somebody else I forget. Both are great books (and a lot easier), though not as great as this one.

Unbelievable !!!!

I have discovered this book after I bought two other ones by Pierre Herm�. I had tried the Pear & Fig Charlotte as well as the Lemon Tart and I wanted to take it to the next level. This book may be made for professionals but I had no problem making the Cinnamon Buns for everybody's enjoyment. Other more sophisticated creations may require special tools but with Pierre's detailed instructions and hints, it is not difficult to replicate what you see on the beautiful pictures.
My next experiment will involve chocolate. I am gathering the necessary equipment to be able to temper, shape and cut chocolate.
I highly recommend this book. It is the first time that a professional really shares his art with the general public. Just try it you'll be amazed !
