A missed opportunity

I read this book with my 9 year old. Leonardo da Vinci is a very interesting figure in history and I don't think that this book did a good enough job capturing that, even for a book designed for youths. The book made him sound more like a whiney artist that never finished anything and just bickered back and forth with Michelangelo. The book didn't really go beyond his painting and hardly talked about any of his other ideas. I just felt like this was a wasted opportunity.

Good book with great info about do Vinci. The large font, pictures, and short chapters make it an easy read. We homeschool and we read one "Who Was..." book each week for enrichment. Fast shipping, arrived in perfect condition. Will add it to our collection.

Great. This series while having different authors shares the similarities of quality binding, interesting premises and outstanding content. 7th grade grandson loves them.

Purchased as fun free reading material. So I scanned pages and table of contents but am not going to read a child's book that is for fun enrichment. This series all share a basic format and orientation. Fun time reading. Actual school usage for reports etc... would need other source materials to either confirm or debunk content.

Dennis J. Caine is an internationally recognized authority on the epidemiology of injury in sports. His research and writing - much of it on pediatric sports injuries - has been widely published. Most notably, his articles on growth plate and gymnastics injuries resulted from his collaboration in several auxological and injury epidemiology studies. Jan Borms is since 2001 a Professor Emeritus of Human Biometry and Health Promotion. He received his PhD from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB), Belgium. He was formerly Head of the Department of Human Biometry and Biomechanics at the Faculty of Physical Education at the VUB. He was the first (founding) President of ISAK, the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry.

About the Author
Anita Johnston, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice who specializes in women's issues and eating disorders. She co-founded the Anorexia and Bulimia Center of Hawaii in 1982 and lectures widely. Dr. Johnston lives with her husband and two daughters in Kailua, Hawaii.

This is a deeply insightful book that speaks to women with disordered eating of all types and severities. I've found that one of the most terrifying aspects of living with an eating disorder is the sense of stark isolation from others that we feel, fueled by the powerful secrets that we keep. As a woman recovered from bulimia, I was appreciative of Dr. Johnston's ability to help me see the many commonalities among women who suffer with eating disorders.
Johnston uses stories, myth and symbol to help explain the emotional and spiritual struggles that women encounter as they seek to regain a balance between heart and mind. Her description of the labyrinth as a metaphor of women's healing path serves as a gentle reminder that healing from disordered relationships with food is not a simple, straight-forward, linear process; and that being judgmental of our "progress" toward healing can only hinder our journeys.
I have read this book several times and have shared it with my mother, friends and colleagues. It has been a catalyst for many emotionally and intellectually fruitful discussions. I recommend it whole-heartedly.

This book lifted my spirits when I needed it most

I feel compelled to share with potential readers of Anita Johnston's EATING IN THE LIGHT OF THE MOON how much this book has helped me on my recovery from bulimia. As a woman with an eating disorder, let me assure that the path to recovery is a long difficult journey, but when things get tough, to this day, I turn to this book.
The concept is different than anything I have read to date, and I have read a lot. I love analysis, thought and literature. Johnston, who, by the way, runs an acclaimed eating disorder clinic in Hawaii uses multicultural fairy tales and myths to illustrate to the reader important steps on the journey to recovery. The story I return to again and again is that of the Tutu bird.
Briefly put, there was a young girl who lived in a village in Africa where the people were starving. Like all the other village children, she was sent out to fetch the animals that had been captured in the village traps overnight so that the villagers might eat. When she got there, there was a Tutu bird in the trap. His song was so sweet that she set him free. She returned to the village and explained what happened. The villagers were so angry that they buried her alive in a mud hut and left her to die. She cried and cried. One day, she heard a sweet song and a ray of light came though the top of her hut. The next day she heard the song again and realized that it was the Tutu bird. The bird was pecking a hole in the mud hut to free her! The bird then dropped in fruits and nuts. This continued until the girl was well fed and the Tutu bird could free her. She returned to an astonished village with the Tutu bird nourished compared to the thin villagers and then left with the Tutu bird to go into the forest forever. The point of the story: Find your voice, listen to it and don't stray. It will serve you in the end no matter how bleak things seem at the time.
If your mind is a literary one - if you are a person who finds deep meaning in stories/books - then PLEASE purchase this book. It has instrumental in my recovery and I really want to thank Ms. Johnston for that. I hope EATING IN THE LIGHT OF THE MOON will speak to you as it has to me.

Seventeen years old at the time, she married fellow activist Leonard Crow Dog, medicine man and spiritual leader of the American Indian Movement (AIM). Written with Erdoes ( Lame Deer ; Seeker of Visions ), her searing autobiography is courageous, impassioned, poetic and inspirational. Her girlhood, a vicious circle of drinking and fighting, was marked by poverty, racism and a rape at 14. She ran away from a coldly impersonal boarding school run by nuns where, she reports, Indian students were beaten to induce them to give up native customs and speech. The authors write of AIM's infiltration by FBI agents, of Mary Crow Dog helping her husband endure prison, of Indian males' macho attitudes. Born in 1955 and raised in poverty on the Rosebud Reservation, Mary Crow Dog escaped an oppressive Catholic boarding school but fell into a marginal life of urban shoplifting and barhopping. A 1971 encounter with AIM (the American Indian Movement), participation in the 1972 Trail of Broken Treaties march on Washington, and giving birth to her first child while under fire at the 1973 siege of Wounded Knee radicalized her. Anglo-Indian confrontations are characterized by extreme prejudice and violence, but some whites (the Erdoes family, William Kunstler, Marlon Brando, and others) offer genuine support. Caustic humor sparks the matter-of-fact narrative. Wife of a Sioux medicine man, Mary Crow Dog exemplifies the contemporary movement back to Native land, religion, and values. Highly recommended for American history, Native American, and women's history collections.

Tells It Like It Was

I really dig what the author is saying. She tells it like it was--how she and others were treated by those implementing U.S. government policy (abominably) as well as incidents like her and her friends "liberating" items from stores.

Man's inhumanity to man always slays me. Though it's been happening from the beginning of time, I always find it incredible.

I found the first half of the book more interesting than the second half. The paragraphs eventually became too long for me and not as interesting. It felt more like an obligatory detailing of the facts than an impassioned narrative of the experiences of AIM, etc.

Though I found myself skimming portions of the second half, I still recommend this book.

Worth Reading

A very good story, and an important one to read. It does not flow well, and jumps around in timelines, however, so at times it was difficult to follow. The story is that of the life of a woman born into very difficult circumstances, as a "half-breed" Lakota. Her family lives in abject poverty on a reservation, and even when she is sent to be educated in a Catholic school, she is punished for her heritage. She grows to embrace her tribal customs and rituals, and joins in the movement to better the lives of the American Indians, risking her life to make a difference. It was worth the effort to read.

Learned a lot

I'm embarrassed to admit that my knowledge of Native American/American Indian history is poor. Like slavery, the Holocaust, the Trail of Tears and other abominations, I find them too depressing and heart wrenching. I've read enough to know that these are shameful horrors (like the terrors inflicted on victims of ISIS/DAESH today) of man's inhumanity to man.

Lakota Woman is written in a simple style that makes the book more readable and credible. I've read about the depressive conditions on the "res" and the influence of alcohol and other societal issues of native clans (including Alaska) and am amazed that this still goes on. Also the raids and other mistreatment continue.

Perhaps books like this one will help to educate the rest of us. I've ordered and look forward to reading her other book: Ohitika Woman.

Disappointing short story
By History fan
I usually love Agatha Raisin, but her stories are getting more and more annoying. This short story is another example of that: even someone as clueless about cooking as Agatha has to realise you can't spray bug poison on a pudding! It's so silly it's not funny anymore. Come on!, she's always been a clever lady, not this disgusting harpy.

I hope old reliable Agatha comes back in future instalments of the series, but I wouldn’t recommend this particular book to anyone who doesn’t know Agatha, they would do much better by reading the first books in the saga.

Extremely short

I have now started to go to see the number of pages in a kindle book before I buy it this is an extremely short story. It was enjoyable but disappointing. I have noticed that many books are just tasters now so I check. Most books can be sampled so I cannot understand this practice. I am a fan of Agatha Raisin and like the story. It would have made a good book

As usual, a delightful Agatha story. This is short, but fun and resolves nicely. Some new characters in the village, as entertaining as ever.
