About the Author
Philippe Desfray is the Co-founder of and Vice President of R&D at Softeam. Internationally renowned expert and author of several books on modeling, Philippe is a contributing member of the OMG, where he participates in the elaboration of a number of standards, notably UML and BPMN. He has been involved in model driven development research, standardization, and tooling for nearly two decades.

Gilbert Raymond is a Senior Consultant and head of Softeam’s Information System and Methods division. Gilbert is an expert in Information Systems and BPM, and is TOGAF 9-certified.

TOGAF is the de facto standard for Architectural work. This is a good book. It covers vast area from a pragmatic perspective. I read this book on Safari Books Online.

Poorly written

This is poorly written book. The authors have done a bad job with both TOGAF and UML. I purchased it mainly to study how to use UML for creating TOGAF artifacts. I am disappointed to see how many non-UML notations have been used in the examples in the book. As an Enterprise Architect and Data Modeler I discourage people from using non-standard notations on the diagrams. The whole point for creating Enterprise Architecture is to bring standardization in the way an organization communicates about is present and future.

I recommend that these authors study UML and then revise this book thoroughly.

An excellent for a beginner

This book is an excellent instructional book for a novice/starting plumber like me, an IT/electronics person. With the excellent fundamentals, the nice and colorful drawings and the detailed step-by-step instructions, I was able to replace a p-trap, a tail piece and a strainer of a kitchen sink on my own. I attribute this first-ever accomplishment of mine to this book. The book is so simple, so informative, even a 12-year-old can do the job after a few minutes of reading. Highly recommended for aspiring plumbers. How's that for cost-saving from expensive plumbers and boosting your self-actualization and learning a new skill ?

About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean’s Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School’s finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California.

Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and Gatton Research Fellow in the Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. He has a long-standing interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance, and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. Professor Jordan has published numerous articles on issues such as cost of capital, capital structure, and the behavior of security prices.

Only kept it because it was required

This book is riddled with typos. It doesn't present the concepts in clear ways, mainly because the authors will use four or five different terms to mean the same thing. It reads like the four authors wrote bits and pieces for each chapter and just crammed all of it together without much time for editing. The sample questions are not solved in a way that makes any sense, and the questions at the end of each chapter are worded terribly as well as being much more complicated than what is presented in the text. It is simply a horrible book. I also had to purchase Essentials of Corporate Finance 7th edition by three of the four authors of this abomination, and it is a far better textbook. Same exact concepts but presented more succinctly. I don't know why any professor would use this book.

Worst textbook that I have ever used!

This textbook was completely useless! If you are taking a class that requires this book, don't bother. You are better off searching the internet for how to complete the necessary equations. This book doesn't flow well, the equations are not explained through, and the terminology used is very confusing. Combine this book with an instructor that barely teaches the material and you have one student left in the dark depths of frustration!

Grade 6 Up—Kor relates memories of life in the village of Portz, Transylvania (Romania), where she was raised on a large farm, "never aware of the anti-Semitism [that pervaded the country] until 1940, when the Hungarian army came." Six-year-old Eva and her identical twin, Miriam, the only Jewish children in their small mixed-grade classroom, suddenly found themselves taunted and beaten by once-friendly classmates. At 10 years of age, the twins and their family were forced to live among seven thousand other Jews in a fenced-in field, protected from the elements only by tents made of their own blankets and sheets and by the clothes on their backs. They were soon taken on a four-day train ride to Auschwitz, standing all the way, with no food or drink. There the sisters were "selected" to be victims of Dr. Josef Mengele's medical "research." Eva's amazing fortitude and her desire to protect her sister helped her to survive a horrible disease brought on by an injection. Both twins endured a terrifying daylong separation during a forced march between camps; the remaining Auschwitz prisoners were liberated by Soviet soldiers, and the girls found a way to go home in search of family survivors. Kor's straightforward first-person narrative is unusual because it details life in the concentration camp through the eyes of a child who lived among children. Lisa Rojany Buccieri has written over 100 children's books, including several award-winning and bestselling titles. She is also a publisher executive and editor with over 20 years of experience in the industry. Lisa lives with her family in Los Angeles.

Heartbreaking, but uplifting. A must-read story!

Surviving the Angel of Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz is adapted from Eva Mozes Kor's self-published memoir, Echoes From Auschwitz: Dr. Mengele's Twins, The Story Of Eva And Miriam Mozes. This first-person account is intended for readers in grade six and up.

On January 31, 1934, Eva and Miriam Mozes entered the world as identical twin sisters. The twin girls, along with their parents and older sisters Edit and Aliz, lived in the village of Portz in Transylvania, Romania. As the only Jewish family in the community, they increasingly became more and more aware of the growing anti-Semitism pervading the culture. When Eva and her sister began school in 1940, two new teachers were brought into the city by the Nazis. With them, they brought books containing caricatures of Jews and propaganda films. Their classmates began to see them as "Dirty Jews" and turned against them. Things progressively got worse until finally, in 1943, their father decided it was time to try to leave their home and escape to the safety of Romania. Unfortunately, they were too late. The Hungarian Nazi youth had been stationed outside their home to make sure they did not escape.

The year that Eva and Miriam turned ten, they, along with the rest of their family, were transported in a cattle car to Auschwitz. Dressed identically since birth, the girls were quickly identified in their matching dresses. With a flick of Dr. Mengele's baton, they were separated from the rest of their family. Because they were identical twins, they were of particular interest to Dr. Mengele. Dr. Mengele wanted to learn how to create perfect Aryan babies and interred twins, along with giants, dwarfs, the handicapped and gypsies became his human guinea pigs. Eva, the stronger of the twins in spirit, refused to give in to the Nazis. She realized from the beginning that she must survive so that her sister is able to survive. Subjected to horrific experiments and left for dead, Eva will not let her sister down. They will survive Auschwitz together.

In the epilogue, we learn that Eva has forgiven Dr. Mengele. She explains that anger and hatred are seeds of war, while forgiveness is the seed for peace. 1n 1984, Eva and her sister Miriam founded CANDLES (Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors).

I feel that this book is truly remarkable. The atrocities of WWII are difficult to explain to younger individuals, but the particular atrocities of Dr. Mengele are that much more difficult. The authors did an amazing job at toning down the subject matter enough to allow a younger audience to learn from Eva's experience. I read this book with my 10-year-old daughter and although some parts of the book brought tears of sadness to both our eyes, we also shed tears of relief and admiration for this amazing woman and her sister. Although I've read many other books about WWII, I still learned from this book, as did my daughter.

Hard topic deftly handled

This is a book that could easily win a Newbery Medal. The difficult subject matter was presented with sensitivity and grace.

The temptation in writing a book about children in the Holocaust would be to give in to righteous indignation and melodrama. Instead, the authors focus on the remarkable character of Eva, a twin who was determined to keep herself and her sister alive, even while undergoing severe physical abuse. The reader learns what it felt like to be a Jewish girl in a deadly environment, but is not overwhelmed by despair. We admire Eva as she finds numerous ways to survive, relying on unusual strength, determination, and luck.

Although it would be understandable, there is never a hint of the overriding bitterness one might expect to hear from a survivor. Instead, the reader comes away with the feeling that even in the midst of the unspeakable, people can survive and go on to live satisfying lives.

I think Rojany-Buccieri did an outstanding job of taking Kor's memories and translating them into a story that will fascinate junior readers. Bravo!

Eva and Miriam Mozes were just 10 years old when their family was sent to Auschwitz. When their parents and older sisters were sent to the gas chambers, their lives were spared and because they were twins, they became subjects of Dr. Josef Mengele's experiments. In Surviving the Angel of Death, Eva recounts the harrowing ordeals she and Miriam faced. She provides plenty of detail, though there are gaps she cannot fill in - for example, she was deliberately infected with a disease Mengele expected to be fatal so that he could kill Miriam when Eva died and compare the healthy body to the diseased one. She survived, though she still does not know what illness he gave her. Even after the camp was liberated, Eva and Miriam did not have an easy time. They eventually went to Israel, and then to America. Eva describes her difficult early years in Indiana and the anti-Semitism she faced. In 1984, Eva and Miriam founded a support group for people who had been victims of Mengele's sadistic experiments, and in 1995 Eva opened a Holocaust museum in Terre Haute, Indiana. (She is also known as the subject of a recent controversial documentary entitled "Forgiving Dr. Mengele" which highlights her ideas about justice, revenge and the possibility of healing through forgiveness.) Kor and Buccieri include maps to help readers place the events and photos to help make the people seem more real. Though painful to read, Surviving the Angel of Death provides an informative first-hand account of the harrowing experiences of one set of twins at Auschwitz. For ages 14 and up. Marci Bloch

Nice and fast paced space opera

“Doc” Smith was a prolific writer of the Sci-fi genre. Very popular in the fifties and sixties, Lorde Tedric was a “Flash Gordon” type of hero in a mixed Sci-fi – Fantasy setting.

This is still a very entertaining story of a hero from another universe, which fought against sorcery and superstition and was “transported” to our universe for a purpose by the mysterious scientists.

Graduated from an “elite” academy (degenerated through the ages), Lord Tedric’s first mission will involve making contacts and allies, investigate a slav…errr…laborers revolt in a mining operation, face a powerful ancient enemy of Humanity and unveil a mysterious terror. All this while keeping “internal” enemies at bay.

Interesting, fast paced and exciting, it is obviously highly dated specially in the tech department (expected). Even so, it is interesting to check the development of the genre and to meet an interesting character or two.

Longer than DJ Heart's usual. Very hot:)

I like the sort of twisted, dubcon-ish relationships DJ heart writes. This was the longest book I have read by Heart, and it had more of a story than is usual. It features Grant and his omega Noah, who are married, and Derek, an alpha they are bringing into their relationship. Grant is not very sensitive or thoughtful, and a little bit of a bully. Derek, on the other hand, is very nice. Noah is the typical sweet omega who doesn't know how pretty he is.

So I thought Grant didn't redeem himself enough, but the sex was hot and I really liked Derek and Noah. Almost gave it four stars, but in the end I enjoyed it.

Equal parts good and bad

OK, so even from the very first page, there was so much that was just wrong with this story. Alpha Grant Hunter is at a party with his omega husband, Noah. Grant is one side of the room watching Noah swaying & gripping the bar for balance because “he’d obviously exceeded his 2 drink allowance” (Problem #1). While standing by the bar, “he smiled up at the alpha who obviously didn’t know he was taken” (Problem #2). “If he’d just wear a collar like a normal omega…” (a disobedient omega, Problem #3). All of this was just on the first page! And then to know that the whole ballroom had gone silent because they saw what was going on, which means that Grant has been publicly embarrassed by his omega (Problem #4). After they get home, the story mentions how Noah would often push boundaries just to see how angry Grant would get or how bad the punishments would be. Am I reading this wrong, or is this an exceedingly childish man who’s clearly not ready to be in any type of committed relationship, let alone marriage? 2 weeks after the party, Grant’s sister asked if he’d be filing for divorce.

The way the author writes the characters is what’s the problem. Noah is annoyingly immature, and I think part of that immaturity is never speaking up about being too sore or tired for sex. He hardly ever speaks up for himself, even though Grant has proven that he’s not going to punish him harshly. Grant thinks Noah’s too good for him (that couldn’t be more wrong), and vice-versa. Grant thought it would be a good idea to bring a younger alpha into the relationship, assumingly as a benefit to Noah, but it made no sense to me. There was not really a good reason, and the relationship between Grant & Noah was on thin ice as it was. Grant was a hothead who tended to fly off the handle first and ask questions later, but I think a lot of it was him being so strongly influenced by his family’s thoughts and wishes. Derek was just a good guy mediator-type who was dragged into the middle of this mess. Even though it never went through, I was glad that Noah went and got those divorce papers. It was the catalyst needed to force Grant to set things right. The story isn’t badly written, I just think that we (the readers) were brought into this just as the s**t was about to hit the proverbial fan.

Other problems: 1) Editing was terrible. Typos/misspellings, punctuation, capitalization. If I saw the word “chose” in place of “choose” 1 more time I was gonna scream. Plus in the beginning it said Grant was 6 ft tall. Later it said Derek was 6 ft 3 inches but still shorter than Grant. 2) Noah had petitioned the courts to become independent. Why? Also, in every other shifter story I’ve ever read, a lone wolf would not be permitted, and would be killed immediately with no forethought. 3) For such a supposedly intimidating alpha, why was Grant so freaking manhandled by his mother and sister? And I think the attorney lied, I think that prenup was put together by his mother & sister. 4) The thing with knotting Noah's throat, and then massaging his neck, causing him to choke and gag? Yeah, that's kinda not sexy. Not into asphyxiation, sorry.

Really good read

Noah struggles with trying to figure out how long he has before his Alpha tosses him aside. While grant brings in another alpha into there relationship because he fears he is to old for Noah. This book was a good read and I really liked how much Derek was there for Noah and showed him how much he loved him

Very lightweight treatment of the Java EE APIs

This book provides a lightning quick review of all aspects of the Java EE 7 stack - including the WebSocket and JSON APIs - in about 300 pages.

This is an ambitious goal especially considering that entire books have been written on what exists as a single chapter here. Consequently, what you end up with is a book that is neither an introductory text for newcomers to the technology, nor one with the details required by advanced practitioners.

For e.g., the second chapter discusses all of Servlets 3.1 in 20 pages - including new features such as nonblocking I/O and upgrade processing - without the depth of coverage needed to show how they might be used effectively.

Overall, since the excellent (and free) Java EE 7 tutorial covers the exact same ground and is just as readable, I'm not sure why this book was even considered necessary.

In the end, I rated this book at 3-stars (It's Okay) given that it was well written, and had decent production values (proofing and technical editing).

A must in your JavaEE rescue kit

I received this book as a part of the now dead O'Reilly users group program. When I asked for this book I was specially interested due comments from my development peers . . . and most importantly because I was in the middle of a Software Architecture definition.

I'm writing this review after 7 months of using it on daily basis, basically because our development stack is composed by AngularJS on the front-end and JavaEE 7 on the back-end (with a huge bias to the Hat company). At the office we have an small books collection (because IT books are pretty dead after five years), and Aurun's book is our prefered book for the "Java EE 7 rescue kit".

If I have to choose two adjectives for this book I must say "quick and versatile", this book deserves all of its fame because it has the balance between a good reference book and a user friendly introductory book, most of the IT books don't achieve it.

I don't wanna copy the index page but I have the following favorite chapters:

Servlets
RESTFul Web Services
SOAP Web Services
JSON Processing
Enterprise Java Beans
Context and Dependency Injection
Bean Validation
Java Transactions
Java Persistence

Most of the book samples are based on Glassfish, and is easy to guess why looking at the publication date. However, talking from my true-heavy-metal-monkey-developer-architect experience, this book uses only pure JavaEE 7 apis and I've been able to run/use the samples on Wildfly without issues.

For those that are looking a good book for JavaEE 7 development, on any of the certified Java EE 7 servers this is a must.
Highlights

Good balance between tutorial and reference.
Few content compared to the Java EE Tutorial but still in the point.
The samples should work on any Java EE 7 server.

Could be better

WebSockets section is small in relation to the other chapters, it feels incomplete.
The cover brings to my mind the good old days when Glassfish was that application server that everybody is talking.

Move from Java EE 6 to Java EE 7

Java EE 7 Essentials is a really good book to get start with Java EE 7. The author gives a lot of information about Java EE in general and what are the additions of Java EE 7 in particular, accompanied by examples that clarify these new concepts.

In my opinion some of the examples provided in the book are too simple and for my taste I wish they were a bit more complex but of course I understand the point of view of the author to write examples for all kind of readers.

One part which I really like about the book, and I haven't seen in many technical books, was a complete final example. This is something that I have found so valuable, because after reading the book it helps you to have an overall overview of what you have learnt and how each of the new Java EE features fits together.

This is a book that all Java EE developers should read to keep their knowledge updated with the new capabilities of Java EE 7. But I discourage this book for developers who didn't know anything about Java EE 6, because the author focuses on Java EE 7 specification and assumes that you already know the basics of Java EE6.

In summary I would say that this is a "must have" book for all developers who want to update his knowledge about Java EE.

While on facebook, a sister from church stated she thought it was time to read The Shack again so I looked it up to see what it was about and immediately order it for my kindle fire. Once I started reading it I read it in a 24 hour period because I couldn't put it down. Once he got to the shack I got so excited in the story I had to calm myself down and take it slow because my mind was all over the place wondering what I'd do or say. I love this book and like my sister friend I will read it again and again and imagine myself there.

Great variety of fun and educational games

As a karate instructor, I appreciate the creativity Sensei Massie demonstrates in this short yet informative book. I am planning my fall classes now and will be incorporating not only the games and activities, but the explanations of the benefits of each. After teaching for almost 35 years, my kids' classes were feeling a little stale. This book gave me the shot of adrenaline I needed and I'm sure my students will appreciate. The games are easy to incorporate regardless of class size and should be very helpful with my students in my Special Needs class who have difficulty staying focused. Many thanks to the author.

A lot of great drills and games

The drills and games in this book will be great for teaching my kids. Some are simple and will be perfect for my 5 and 6 year old. Others will be better when they are bigger and stronger. Variations on some of them will keep even the simple skills fun for older kids. I've tried a few of these already and my kids love them, and they are learning techniques at the same time. This should help me keep my kids interested in martial arts for a long time.

Mary Higgins Clark Keeps You Guessing

If you are a fan of the quick read where circumstances take the place of characterizations, you will certainly enjoy this tale of suspense by noted author Mary Higgins Clark. With her short chapter format, Clark tempts the reader to read just one more page that leads to one more chapter and before the reader knows it, he/she is so hooked that he/shee needs to figure out who the guilty party is before turning in for the night.

"On the Street Where You Live" is a beach reader's dream. Higgins Clark successively toys with the idea of a dual murder set in a lovely summer hamlet in New Jersey at the turn of the century---asking the question if somehow the soul of the murderer found its way into a modern day persona, how would modern sensibilities fueled by present day forensic techniques deal with the horrendous repercussions of another set of murders?

As in her other offerings, Higgins Clark keeps you guessing as to the identity of the murderer---and there are many would-bes from which to choose. As with many of her tales, that last defining act which leads us to discover the murderer's identity hinges on a systematic plan to do away with an attractive young professional woman and some last minute bad calls by the police and the gentlemen interested in the clueless target.

Similar in technique to her other novels, Higgins Clarks doesn't throw us any curve balls, just delivers what she has come to be known for---a good tale of suspense which keeps one guessing until the end. Just don't expect any of the characters to leap out on the page at you---Clark deals more in building a story around a media event current day issue rather than delivering a more subtle univeral message. Great quick airport read.

This would make a great movie!

Lawyer Emily Graham has just moved into her ancestral home in a picturesque seaside village when a series of murders begins. And not just any murders: They replicate to the last detail a series of murders that took place there one hundred years ago, and the anniversary of the last killing is this Saturday...who will be next?
Mary Higgins Clark has created a strong heroine in Emily and filled the story with a large cast of suspects that will keep you guessing until the last minute. My favorite chapters were those narrated by the unseen killer, who may be just demented or may be the reincarnation of the original killer.
The frequent comparisons between town life in the Victorian era and the present make me think this would make a lovely and suspenseful film. And the big question (has the original killer been reincarnated?) makes for fun, if creepy, speculation. Heartily recommended.
