In a 1952 nor’easter, the distress of two ships off Cape Cod initiated a dramatic Coast Guard operation recounted here by coauthors Tougias and Sherman. Both vessels were World War II surplus, cheaply built, unwisely kept in service, and broken in two by the storm. All four halves floated, for the moment, and the authors’ narrative accordingly tracks four separate search-and-rescue efforts that form the complete story. The most prominent, in the press at the time and in official honors conferred afterward, concerned one motorized lifeboat, a puny 36 feet long and manned by four men, dispatched to do battle with the maelstrom’s towering waves. This is the seascape of The Perfect Storm, and the authors do justice to the peril in a tight account of the action. Plotting the course of CG36500, the utilitarian name of the lifeboat captained by Bernie Webber (interviewed for this book), Tougias and Sherman reach their peak of tension in the sink-or-swim moments when mariners abandoned ship and chanced their lives on their rescuers’ skill and bravery. Gripping Tale of Sacrifice and Heroism

This book is REMARKABLE! The story - a true story- moves right along and unfolds as it happened and without hyperbole. Off the coast of Cape Cod in 1952 a killer winter storm with hurricane-force winds and massive seas break not one, but two tired World War II vintage tankers in two. The stranded crews on the sinking derelicts desperately hope for rescue in these miserable conditions. Coast Guard men responded without hesitation and put their own lives in extreme peril. The characters do not consider themselves "heroes" - they are simply doing their duty; you get to know them because of what they have done - and what they have done and their courage is incredible. You CANNOT put this book down. Many non-fiction authors just tell the story leaving one to wonder about what happened to the "characters" after the epic has passed. This is not the case here. In the Epilogue and Acknowledgments sections - it's great to find out what happens to these people that you've come to know in the pages of this book. The research was clearly extensive. Michael Tougias and Casey Sherman working together have produced a tour-de-force - a work much greater than the sum of its parts.

Great story

As the person responsible for the restoration and preservation of the MLB CG36500 , the story told by Mike and Casey is outstanding . Excellent research and interviews have been used to produce the story . Being responsible for this historic vessel that was involved in the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history and having spent time with all four crewmen , I can assure the readers that this is an accurate and well told account of the 32 seamen rescued from the Pendleton .

The Finest Hours

I started reading this book, and a day and half later I finished it. I couldn't put this book down and it's an incredible story. I'm not usually into stories like this, but it was tastefully done, quick, to the point and the story was not exaggerated. It gives us a look into what our Service men and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard (if I forgot anyone I apologize), really go through on a daily basis in protecting everyone in this country and how dangerous it can be at times. I highly recommend reading it. You won't be disappointed.

A "must read" for anyone interested in the intersection of social media and market research

When I saw that Ray Poynter had written a book on social media research, I knew I had to get it. Having been a reader of his blog for some time, I know Ray is a true expert--someone with real word knowledge, not just academically interesting theories. His book did not disappoint me. In actuality the book also covers online research in general--defining and outlining the pros and cons of various methods. But for me, it is Part 3 on social media that really makes this book a stand out. He covers the expected topic of social network monitoring--from anecdotal blog monitoring to the use of more full service solutions (though he only lists a few by name, there are at least 10 significant providers at this time). But he also covers the broader aspects of social media research and discusses some of the sensitive topics such as privacy and ethical issues, and implications for the future of the research industry itself.

Some favorite sections:

Chapter 12 "Blog and Buzz mining"
Chapter 16 "Research Techniques and Approaches", which among other things covers the topic of DIY research and the questions of when to do research in-house vs using an outside agency.
Chapter 19 "Trends and Innovations" is a great overview of current 2010 topics--providing great context for anyone planning a market research budget/strategy.

Throughout, the book is very objective and presents a balanced view. Ray consistently points out both the opportunities and the risks associated with various research methods.

This is a great book for the under-30 crowd!

This book was an eye-opening experience for me. I am ordering a second book to loan to friends. The title seems a bit offensive, but it is not intended as a 'how to' manual, besides most of us 'nice guys' couldn't act the ways that are described in the book, even if we wanted to. But it explains the action and re-action of things people do and say and WHY. Great BOOK!

very insightful -- must read for "nice guys"

It is very important to note that he is NOT encouraging guys to be jerks. He has simply identified the (positive) qualities that jerks have, which are attractive to women. If you are a real "nice" guy, you must have lots of female friends that keep ending up with jerks, so it is very natural to ask WHY?
He contends that women want guys to be a set of opposites, something like:
1. unpredictable, yet goal-oriented
2. spontaneous, yet plans dates
3. adventurous, yet in control
4. aggressive, yet mellow and cool
5. mysterious, yet their best friend
Are guys like this possible?? Yes, take the example of a (successful) rock musician. He is undpredictable, spontaneous, etc. when on stage, but has his life planned to the exact tour dates in the long run. Which girl hasn't had a crush on a rock-star :) So the key is to be spontaneous and unpredictable in the short term, but goal-oriented and in control in the long run. I believe this is very true, in the long run, women want to be secure with their men, but they want to have FUN in the moment. For me, this paradigm of short time "jerk" long term "nice guy" was new, accurate and very helpful to understanding women.
The second key point made in this book is that nice guys try too hard to please. They are too accepting. Jerks are generally more demanding. And here is the key observation: think about it, what helps you grow more, a someone who pushes you and stretches your abilities, or someone who accepts anything you do? We all remember those teachers who demanded much from us at school. This is why nice guys become boring, they don't cause women to grow. If "nice" guys would just say a harsh word when their lady is late for a date, she wouldn't need to fall for really abusive guys. Also if a woman can get away with treating you badly -- how can she trust you to protect her from being treated badly by others?
The third important advice for nice guys is to focus more on themselves. Jerks are generally passionate about something. They play in a band or have some sport or other hobby. Here he tries to do some Tony Robbins stuff and it's a bit rip-offish, but the basic point is well taken. First put a smile on your own face, then you can make others smile.
All-in-all, this is very insightful for nice guys in their early twenties. Reviewers who complain about this book making guys being jerks have completely misunderstood the concept. This book is not disrespectful towards women. It is not about getting laid. This book is written for nice guys to be more assertive, spontaneous and wild. Unfortunately, most of the real information could be written on a pamphlet. It contains lots of useless rambling. He couldn't make much money on selling a pamphlet now could he? :) Anyway, the information has been helpful to me. But I must admit that I haven't bought the book myself.

Guide to economic evaluation

As a PhD student, this book is a required text book. I found it provides a concise and sysmatic guide to economic evaluation. The material is rich and surprisingly not dry. The book provides examples, graphs, and exercises with answers right after the problems!! Eventhough most examples in the book are from a universal health care(single payer system) perspective, I believe researchers in the US can still use it as a guide with a little adjustment.

An articulate and concise review of current methods

I will restrict my review to Chapter 8 since that is section I have read and used. But suffice it to say that it precisely addressed the problem I was having--finding a clear overview of the methods avaiable for analyzing cost effectiveness using clinic trial data.

My own literatrue reveiw and requests for information yeiled inconsistent and conflicting recommendations. The chapter in this book gave a clear and concise description of the current methods, tying together the various apporaches I found.

While more details in how to apply the methods would be welcomed, it gives just the right amount of information, without favoring one apporach over the other, to allow the reader to evaluate the options available and decide the best one to persue.

This book provides a comprehensive and impartial overview of economic evaluation methods, providing an analyst with a breadth of options to select when planning an economic evaluation. In addition, the authors provide references for learning more detail about particular methods. I found this to be a very helpful guide, compared to several other similar texts.

Basic overview with lots of interesting detail

For anyone interested in learning the basic facts about the Vikings, this little book is an excellent place to begin. Brondsted covers enough to give you a sense of the Vikings and their time. He also provides enough detail to spark interest in reading further.

This book was the perfect book for any school asignment. It gave very specific facts and dates. It only lacked in the fact that it was kind of boring. It gets more interesting as you go along though. Overall, it was a very good book.

These discussions include several techniques and challenges in manufacturing smart composites and characterizing coupled properties, as well as the analyses of composite structures at various length and time scales undergoing coupled mechanical and non-mechanical stimuli considering elastic, viscoelastic (and/or viscoplastic), fatigue, and damage behaviors.

About the Author

Rani Elhajjar is currently a faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA. He holds a Ph.D from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA and has researched the development of analytical and experimental techniques for fracture in pultruded composite materials, test methods for through thickness fracture testing in composites, and nondestructive experimental techniques using thermoelastic stress analysis, digital image correlation, and acoustic emission. Prior to this appointment, he was structural analyst on the 787 Dreamliner program at Boeing, Everett, Washington, USA, where he was responsible for several test programs including the effects of defects on the fuselage structure.

Valeria La Saponara is associate professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California-Davis, USA. She holds a Ph.D in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA (Georgia Tech). A recipient of a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, she has worked in the space research industry for an Italian microgravity-focused research center, subcontractor of NASA, and the European Space Agency; as well as served as instructor in civil and environmental engineering at Georgia Tech, and as assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA.

Anastasia Muliana is associate professor and Gulf Oil/Thomas A. Dietz career development professor II at Texas A&M University, College Station, USA. She holds a Ph.D from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. An educator and researcher of micromechanics and viscoelastic response of composites, she has been published in over 60 journals and 25 conference proceedings. Her work has been recognized at the university level, through a TEES Select Young Faculty Award, as well as nationally through the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, US Air Force Young Investigator Program, and Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Author/Editor was my Professor. Book provides a great description of what's out there so far, and the development of the theory in an emerging field. To read something more 'up-to-date'/cutting-edge you'd really have to switch to reading professional scholarly Journal articles; this book is as cutting edge as it gets for a text book in this field.
